TU teaching hospital successfully performs first gender-affirming surgery

Tribhuvan University (TU) Teaching Hospital has performed gender-affirming surgery for the first time. Although the hospital had previously conducted various types of surgeries for the transgender community, this is the first time a full gender-affirming surgery has been carried out.

The surgery was led by plastic surgeon Dr. Kalireza Hamidin Zahromi, in coordination with Professor Dr. Jayanman Shrestha, the head of the hospital’s plastic surgery department.

The operation was conducted on a 25-year-old transgender individual from Janakpur, during which tissues from the male genital organ were appropriately used to reconstruct female genitalia. The hospital statement mentions that the surgery was intended to help the individual attain their desired gender identity.

The hospital believes that this new availability of the service in Nepal—previously only accessible abroad at high costs—will bring significant relief to the transgender community.
